The Musical Contexts Version 1.0 Year 7 Music Baseline Assessment
Listening Test can be used to assess the musical knowledge in terms of
Listening, Appraising and Understanding skills of new year 7’s at the start
of term, during or at the end of their first unit of work. The test can be easily administered in a
one hour music lesson and comes complete with an audio file which contains
all the instructions, example questions and musical extracts. The test
covers areas such as pitch, rhythm, melody, the elements of music,
notation, world music and musical
instruments. There’s
also space for pupils to record their achievements in music, both in junior
school and beyond and to set any targets they’d like to achieve during the
year(s) ahead. There’s supporting guidance notes and a mark scheme for
teachers and the audio file is available in a choice of two formats - an
“automated” recording and an actual human - the choice is yours! |

Please feel free to copy, modify, customise,
personalise and use Musical Contexts resources for your own use, with your
students and pupils, within your own school or college and on internal
Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). Please use the resources responsibly and
ethically, as continued irresponsible free sharing and poaching of paid
published resources (particularly “free sharing” to Facebook groups and the
current trend of setting up “free” music resource websites using Musical Contexts and other published resources) is not
only a breach of copyright, but the implications of making these publicly
available on websites, even if only for a short period of time, are that
other schools and teachers can freely access them meaning a loss of earnings
for authors and publishers, jeopardising future resource development for YOUR
subject specification and will only sadly see the demise of sites such as Musical Contexts which rely on the support (and
honesty) of schools and teachers for future development. Musical Contexts is unitedly working with a range of
publishers together to monitor Facebook groups for such “free sharing” and
regular checks to the web are made using a program which scours the web for
PDFs using automated code (scrapers). Any subscriber found freely
sharing Musical
Contexts resources
online will have their log-in cancelled with immediate effect and no refund
given in respect of this. |
Following recent feedback regarding paper costs and
ease of marking, Musical Contexts has now adapted the Year 7 Music Baseline
Assessment Listening Test in an alternative format. Available to download above are a shortened
“two-page” Pupil Answer Booklet, together with a two page “Pupil Supplement”
(for use in Questions 4-6 and not to be written on). A simpler mark scheme has been added
whereby page 1 can be copied onto acetate, cutting out the bold rectangles
for easy marking (questions 5d-5f still required “longhand marking”) and
score totalling. It is hoped that
these additions will assist in the administration of the test. |

The Musical Contexts Version 2.0 Year 7 Music Baseline Assessment
Listening Test has been developed following recent changes and trends in
music education, particularly with recent reforms regarding the new 2016 GCSE
(9-1) Music specifications and after consultation and feedback from a number
of music teachers. As with the Musical Contexts Version 1.0 Year 7 Music Baseline
Assessment Listening Test (still available below), this test has been
designed to assess the musical knowledge in terms of Critical Engagement:
Listening and Appraising skills of new year 7’s at the start of term, during or at the end of
their first unit of work. Following
recent feedback, the Version 2.0 test now features: · A shorter test (six questions - total
time - 25 minutes) · A more concise two-page pupil answer
booklet (can be photocopied back-to-back on A4) · Video-led test containing on-screen
slides with embedded audio, instructions and announcements. · Questions include: Listening to Music
from Different Times and Places (identification of Tempo, Dynamics,
Instruments and Genre), Rhythmic and Melodic Dictation (not based on
repetition), Listening to Music based on Repeated Musical Patterns, a simple
8-mark short-answer GCSE-style Listening Question and a longer prose-style
10-mark GCSE-style Listening Question based on a piece of Film Music. |
